The author of the famous hymn “Standing on the Promises” has several names: Dr. Russell Kelso Carter, Colonel Kelso Carter, Reverend R.K Carter. Raised Presbyterian, he became influenced by a Methodist revival meeting and moved to California from Baltimore where he subsequently divorced his wife and began preaching. He became embroiled with one of the first cases of mail fraud by trying to sell a machine called the “Electropoise” pictured here. By the time he died on August 23, 1928, his fame for the hymn far outweighed the reputation garnered from some of his earlier poor life choices.
