Sen Hiram Revels Gravesite

History nerds like me love a “first” or an “only time this happened” story. Senator Hiram Revels certainly makes that cut as the first African American US Senator elected in the country. And we are proud to have him as a Mississippian.

He’s buried in the fabulous Hill Crest Cemetery in Holly Springs, MS. Hill Crest is chock full of really interesting historical figures and when you can have Confederate Generals and a prominent African American buried just yards away from each other in a Southern public cemetery you’ve got something cool to see. Greenwood Cemetery can boast this as well. There is more Hill Crest to come.

I found his grave with one of my long-time best friends and college roommate Kelton Morris who now resides in Holly Springs (like me he married above his reach and his bride Leigh is a multi-generational Marshall Countian). Here is the video of us finding Revel’s grave and an example of my non-existent video skills.
